Improving Floor Safety
When floors are not maintained properly, they're not only unsightly; they can become dangerously slick and unsanitary. This is especially true in environments that are subjected to significant volumes of soil, grease and persistent moisture such as food service establishments, public restrooms, industrial settings and more.
Not surprisingly, poorly maintained floors are a leading cause of slip-and-fall accidents. According to the National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI), 55% of all slip-and-fall accidents are directly related to the floor surface. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) identified floors and flooring materials as direct contributors to more than 2 million slip-and-fall injuries each year. And, a single claim can cost an establishment tens of thousands of dollars.
Thoroughly removing contaminants from floors not only helps protect [human] health, but promotes floor safety as well. This level of floor safety is hard to achieve using conventional floor care methods such as mops and buckets. In fact, it almost always makes matters worse.
Many kitchen and restroom floors are constructed of porous red or gray quarry tile. Over time, grease, soils and soap can actually fill the pores and bond to the tiles. This greasy build up creates a hazardous film barrier between the soles of the shoe and the floor surface, degrading slip resistance. During mopping, a relatively small amount of cleaning solution is applied, and dwell time is limited, making it difficult to remove or emulsify the soils. Already saturated mop fibers are incapable of absorbing the liquid and soils, and essentially add to the slippery coating. Plus, the moment a mop is wrung into the bucket, the solution becomes contaminated.
Grout lines add to the problem. Soils absorbed by the porous grout stand little chance of being removed. Worse, the tile edges actually squeegee contaminants from the mop's fibers into the grout line. When the water evaporates, impurities, mineral deposits, soap scum and grease penetrate and coat the grout.
