Attaining and maintaining a sanitary state in today’s buildings, especially the restroom, is a challenge, yet one that’s crucial to public health.

It is vital that these areas be cleaned completely and properly to remove the harmful biological hazards and reduce the threats of disease. It isn’t good enough to simply clean for appearance. Cleaning for health must be the ultimate objective.

With that said, very few of today’s cleaning programs are truly designed to achieve healthy results. In fact, ineffective cleaning is still the most common reason for health complaints in a building. It isn’t that those responsible for cleaning are not conscientious in their efforts; instead, it’s often because not enough is known, at least in fundamental scientific terms, about what it is they are confronting. Often times, even the most meticulous cleaning workers unknowingly compromise their own health, and that of other occupants, through improper cleaning methodologies and processes. This is because the science is either not well known or simply doesn’t exist.

Problems in the Industry

Unfortunately, the cleaning industry itself is largely to blame for this state. In general, the industry has been guided by the marketing of products, not the science of cleaning. For the most part, manufacturers have not invested in science to ascertain what is actually required to produce a sanitary outcome, nor have they sought scientific validation to back their claims. What is often passed off as factual is really just theory or opinion, with no supporting evidence. This is often veiled pseudoscience that results from erroneous, yet innocent, assumptions. Or, at its worst, it results from intent to mislead for commercial positioning or gain. If the current predicament is to ever change, it is important for the cleaning industry to turn to science in the pursuit of truth and knowledge. Cleaning science will ultimately lead to effective sanitation, with health as the focus.

Kaivac’s Commitment
