The transmission of MRSA and other infections among students, including student athletes, can have a substantial impact on a school system. Because MRSA is transmitted through skin contact, student athletes are at a particular high risk-- putting wrestling, football and cheerleading programs in jeopardy.
To help prevent the transmission of infectious disease in athletic departments, Kaivac has developed a quick and effective method of cleaning wrestling mats and other padded surfaces using its No-Touch Cleaning system that’s designed to address problems such as MRSA, as well as ring worm, conjunctivitis (commonly known as pink eye) and more.
No-Touch Cleaning, which combines automatic chemical metering and injection, an indoor pressure washer, and a powerful wet vacuum into an integrated system, is proven to be 60 times more effective in reducing bacterial contamination than mops, which are more likely to spread contaminants than remove them. When used with KaiBosh, Kaivac’s hospital grade EPA registered disinfectant that kills MRSA and other dangerous pathogens, No-Touch Cleaning provides a powerful first line of defense against infectious disease.
Before cleaning the mat, we’ll test its surface for bacterial contamination. We’ll use a Petri-film to test for the presence of aerobic bacterial concentrations, measured in CFUS, or Colony Forming Units. Four readings will be taken from various locations on the wrestling mats and averaged together to establish microbial contamination levels.
The cleaning process itself is very quick and easy. Taking one mat at a time, an operator simply applies the automatically diluted disinfectant to the surface in a low pressure fan spray, first walking the perimeter of the mat, then, walking in a serpentine motion to wet the entire mat, starting at the top. During this process, the solution has ample time to loosen soils and work on microorganisms.
Next, using Kaivac’s optional 28” wide area squeegee, the surface is vacuumed dry, working backwards. Keeping the wand to the right side, the operator vacuums the top edge of the mat to the bottom and returns in the same up and down pattern until the surface is completely dry.
With the cleaning completed, new Petri-film measurements are taken and averaged together to confirm cleaning results. The Petri-film results indicated a plunge from the initial 455 CFUs to 1 – an impressive reduction of 99.7%.
In addition to wrestling mats, the No-Touch Cleaning system is also highly effective at removing soils, bacteria and other bio-pollutants from additional areas in an athletic facility, such as restrooms, locker rooms, showers, pool decks, and more.
