  • How to Daily Clean 600 Student Desktops for Health − Why ISSA’s K-12 Clean Standard Helps

Sparks NV ? Wednesday, June 11, 2014. The 501c3 nonprofit Process Cleaning for Healthy Schools® (PC4HS) consortium is pleased to share how to daily clean 600 K-12 student and staff desktops, and why ISSA's K-12 Clean Standard helps ensure healthy outcomes.

According to Rex Morrison, founder and president of PC4HS, the average school custodian within PC4HS daily cleans 20-25 classrooms, each with about 30 desks ? or about 600 desktops per day.

PC4HS uses one of two daily desktop-cleaning methods depending on the school:

1.            A pole-mounted rectangular applicator and microfiber pad (with frequent pad rinsing, solution changes, and replacing the pad at every classroom) to clean 30 classroom desks in a simple, ergonomic process to optimize productivity and "flow" ? or

2.            A hand-held "trowel" and microfiber pad ? with frequent pad rinsing, solution changes, and replacing the pad at every classroom ? to apply and agitate, removing solution with a squeegee.
The system is optimally designed to clean 30 desktops in less than two minutes.

Sanitizing desktops using a "removal" rather than a "poisoning" process is key, he notes. "We believe in removing organic soil (aka, germ-food) and microbes rather than routinely poisoning the environment with disinfectants. Our ATP measurements in striving to meet the goals of the Clean Standard show we are doing this consistently."

Morrison adds: "There is a time and place for proper use of chemical disinfectants, such as in the event of a MRSA outbreak, but pre-cleaning, disinfectant dwell time and rinsing are essential for healthy outcomes ? and nearly impossible to achieve in daily cleaning. Using toxic disinfectants improperly makes them ineffective, polluting the classroom."

"We strive to produce a healthy indoor environment through cleaning. The right process flows from this approach in almost all instances. This involves adopting procedures that remove rather than re-distribute contaminants," concludes Morrison. "ISSA's Clean Standard sets a high bar for ATP targets, showing how removal of soil and germs, makes for consistently healthier outcomes."
