Tile and Grout Cleaning Tips To Save Time—and Your Back

  • Tile and Grout Cleaning Tips To Save Time—and Your Back

Tile appears in restroom floors everywhere, since it is durable and almost universally perceived as easy to clean. But the porous, sunken grout lines make it tough to achieve a deep clean?and anyone who's spent hours tile and grout cleaning, often on hands and knees, can definitely vouch for that. But there are smarter ways to go about tile and grout cleaning: Just a few tips can go a long way toward keeping these floors truly clean, without all the strain.

First: Don't Overload on Chemicals

When confronted with a dirty floor, most people assume they can simply dump a high volume of harsh chemicals on it to solve the problem. But using an abundance of chemicals won't help if your tools or your cleaning process is ineffective. In a cleaning test, Kaivac's vacuum system with tap water proved more effective than a mop with a chemical solution: Kaivac's No-Touch Cleaning system removed 98.6 percent of organic soil from a surface, while mopping removed 56.7 percent. Not that chemicals are worthless?chemical solutions help emulsify the soils, and they play an important part in disinfecting a floor?but the tools and the process are paramount.

Next: Find the Right Tools

The quality of the tools you use has a big impact on how well and how easily you finish the job?it's just like cooking, where a really sharp knife can make all the difference between an arduous process and an easy one.

It doesn't take an expert to see that a mop just slides right over the top of the grout lines. Concentrated scrubbing with a dedicated grout-and-tile tool is a better method, and the best system possible will loosen the germs with a blast of water, and then lift it away with a vacuum tool.

But let's start with the basics: You need a durable squeegee/brush tool to focus pressure in a narrow spot. The heavy-duty brush needs to have a long, durable wand so that cleaners can bear down on it to get a deep clean without having to worry about it bending. If brush and squeegee are accessible on a single wand, it allows the cleaner to quickly shift between both sides for maximum floor coverage.

Better still, there are also dedicated grout brushes that are attached to the backside of a standard brush wand. These provide brushing directly along the grout line for maximum impact, while allowing the cleaner to scrub or squeegee the floor at the same time.

Vacuum Away

Lastly, you have to remove the grime from the floor. Most traditional methods loosen the grime and then redistribute it across the floor, which still leaves soil and residue behind. A spray-and-vacuum tool uses a high-pressure water spray to loosen the soils followed by vacuum suction to lift and permanently remove the contaminants. In the Kaivac No-Touch Cleaning system, a dedicated grouter is also available to blast water directly to the grout lines and make sure they get cleaned out.

Keeping your grout and tile clean is essential to maintain a safe, attractive business, but it doesn't have to take hours of your time or force you to scrub on your hands and knees. With the right tools and a little bit of power, business owners and service contractors can get restrooms truly clean, and do it fast.
