How to Keep Your Bowling Alley Lanes Clean

Over the summer, bowling alleys become popular spots because they offer a fun activity for the whole family to do together. Though this increase in business may be good for your bottom line, it also means that you have to spend even more time keeping your bowling alley lanes and other areas clean. From bowling balls to soda machines, a bowling alley presents unique cleaning problems that call for creative solutions.

Counter Surfaces

Soil, grease, and bacteria can build up on all of the flat surfaces of your bowling alley, from your food counters to your front counter, where dozens of dirty shoes get placed every day. In an effort to prevent cross-contamination, you should not use traditional cleaning tools, such as mops, rags, and sponges, which can actually spread the soil around. You can avoid the process of constantly dipping a rag into dirty water by investing in a squeegee system, which can quickly remove the soil and moisture in one pass.

Bowling Alley Floors

The floors in a bowling alley take a beating every single day. Depending on your clientele, you may deal with spilled beer on one day and ground-in bubble gum the next. You should teach your employees to vacuum up spilled food immediately, and clean the floors frequently to make sure that soda and other liquids don't dry onto the surface. Cleaning a puddle is much simpler than scrubbing away a dried patch of sugar syrup. By cleaning up spills immediately, you can save time and effort.

Bowling Alley Lanes

The lanes themselves are made of a specially laminated wood that's designed to hold a slippery sheen for bowling balls to glide across. The first step in keeping your lanes clean is to dust mop them four times each day. You should begin your day with dusting first thing in the morning, and make sure you dust once again right before conditioning the wood. This prevents the dust from being ground into the surface.

You should also use bowling lane conditioner, which is designed to leave the lane as smooth and slick as possible, to condition your bowling alley lanes every day. But make sure that your employees use the conditioner lightly, as it can build up. You should then strip the lanes of conditioner on a weekly basis to reduce the amount of time older chemicals are in contact with the wood. Once you have stripped the lanes of conditioner, you should put on a fresh coat before allowing customers to use the lanes.
